Those who follow my adventures through Slovakia on Instagram know that Banská Štiavnica is by far my most favourite city in the entire Slovak Republic. Almost every year I find myself returning to this unique city in the heart of the country. Once a mining town (baňa is Slovak for mine), Banská Štiavnica is now a very hipster kind of city, full of small cafe houses, restaurants, art, and the brewery of one of the best Slovak beers, ERB.
I love everything about this city. From the drive to Banská Štiavnica through the impressive landscape of the Štiavnické vrchy, to the unique architecture of the old center, to the imposing old castle as well as the new one at the other side of the city, to the Calvary on the hill-top high above the city. There is so much to see in the city and never enough time. My advice? Stay there for the night, take a car and explore the city as well as its surroundings. It is worth every dime.
